Stones and wood

Sandstone
Reusable
Soft layered stone that soaks up water.
What the simulation uses
- Holds water
- 9 % by volume
- Water it keeps after draining; the rest runs down to the drainage.
- Pore space
- 15 % by volume
- Room for air and water between grains; low means roots suffocate when wet.
- Weight
- 1400 g/L
- How heavy a litre is.
- pH
- 7 to 8.5 pH
- How acid it keeps the soil.
- Mould risk
- none
- How much fresh food it gives white mould; high-risk soils fuzz over in the first weeks.
- Nutrients
- none
- Plant food it brings.
Description
Sand grains cemented together into a porous stone that wicks water. Silica-cemented sandstone is inert, but the common lime-cemented kind can raise pH. A drop of vinegar tells you which you have.
Also called sand stone.
Estimated, where sources were thin: porosity estimated 5-25%; cement type decides pH effect.
